Celebrating the life of those closest to you is important. So, when Rich’s birthday rolled around, it could not go unnoticed. While he relaxed in our room along the Okavango River, across from Angola, I was scouring the tiny town of Rundu in search a cake, card, and candles. After several stops, I managed to piece together all of the above, along with the makings for his favorite drink: gin & tonic.
It was a simple celebration, but considering our location, it was the best I could do. Much to my surprise, he enjoyed the cake and appreciated the card, even though it was meant for a 3-year old. Some might even say that’s fitting.
Rich has been on the move for quite some time, making birthdays and holidays blend with the rest. That’s typically the way things go when you’re away from home for an extended period. Hopefully, thirty-six was a turning point, though. From here on out, I wish him special occasions filled with family, friends, and an overwhelming sense of love, for it’s certainly well deserved.
